I’m getting older and more cynical every day. In the past, as I watched my parents age it seemed to me that they were out of touch with reality; in retrospect they were not. Normal to one generation was deemed to be abnormal for the next. The ebb and flow of how people react is dependent upon their beliefs, their values. Logic, it seems, no longer remains consistent adding to the unpredictability of what appears “logical” from macroeconomics to social norms. What should happen simply doesn’t, driving an “equation” of what once was considered to be a naturally occurring expectation to the limits of abnormality. Philosophically speaking, welcome to our “brave new world”.
Time and time again, especially in the investment arena, we see these effects create unexpected outcomes. If GDP crashes and unemployment soars, interest rates might stop rising and things would be good again, so we cheer for economies to crater. That is considered to be good but, in reality, it’s not, yet that is what we hope for. Not only does this make no sense it’s become normal for “investors” to cheer for it to happen, why?
Politically speaking, surrounding, encircling, sometimes even smothering the world we live in with potentially negative repercussions, we seek to alter widely accepted norms of science. What’s going on in this world? Fifty years ago we fought for women to have equal rights. Today we fight for a newly created subset of grossly unrealistic proportions to upset what we prior considered normal; men can now be women and women can be men in ways that are beyond abnormal; they’re ludicrous. It’s hard to believe that during my short lifetime, with no verifiable underlying scientific evidence we’re altering the belief of something that is genetically impossible. Watson and Crick must be spinning in their graves.
What’s even more illogical is the way our elected leaders, those who politically seek to remain in power stay in power. From the “dead from the neck up” politicians to the outwardly altered body physical government “baggage stealing” employees we actually embrace this change. I ask again, what the hell is going on here? It just doesn’t make much sense yet on every single news channel we watch daily, abnormal values of this nature are heralded. When you think about it, it becomes logical that electing a less than capable President with an incompetent running mate, to a second term, both who undoubtedly are unable to fulfill their obligations makes sense in today’s world. It’s no wonder we now look for negatives in today’s macroeconomic world to take place; given the logic that prevails in our society it only makes sense.
“Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life on this planet.”
Hope you enjoyed this post. I’m just a young 68 years old; my Dad became a broker when I was 13. It’s time for me to ‘give back’ to all of you what’s in my head. It’s not always pretty but it’s based on history . . . and history, unchecked, repeats itself.
