Regardless of whether we’re satisfied with the “state of the union” and the direction of our country, let’s face it, more people are entering the United States of America than leaving. There must be something about the United States that’s more attractive than just living and being here. As an American, from a Ukrainian Jewish family, fortunate enough to legally immigrate in the early 1900s, I empathize with all who follow in our footsteps. All one needs do to be successful here is to wait; just work like hell while you’re waiting. I’d rather be lucky than good and the harder I work, the luckier I get.
It’s important to take some time and “smell the roses”, or peonies as I prefer, recharge your batteries and be thankful for all you have. That’s what this week is all about for me culminating in the celebration of Memorial Day, for me the single most important non-religious holiday we have. I didn’t always realize it’s importance until observing Canadian soldiers pass out “poppy” pins as they remembered comrades who perished keeping their “maple leaf” flag flying high. The Stars & Stripes took on an additional meaning to me; one that I fervently celebrate and cherish.
But being me, and not being able to tear myself away from what’s been reported in the macroeconomic, geopolitical world, the BoJ’s job of ultimately retiring the “dove” and bringing back some form of a “hawkish” stance just became harder. Machinery orders, expected to increase in both month-over-month and year-over-year reports missed by a significant amount. How do you raise interest rates when your economic conditions suggest maintaining lower rates are appropriate? In the same breath, how will the BoJ handle their recent victory over deflation, albeit the resurgence of inflation, without a raise in their interest rates? Maybe inherently, their politically motivated controls of how they handle domestic investment is the issue that needs to be addressed. I’m not smart enough to figure it all out; I’m just the messenger, but last night’s issuance of economic reality caused me to act; I’m again “flat” on my Yen position. Patience is a watchword I follow and “no position” is a “position”. Back to reflecting.
If you think there’s a better place in the world to live go there. When I think about not just those who have given their lives to both establish these United States but more so those who have fought to preserve our union, I take the time to step outside and salute the flag proudly waiving on my front porch. Saying thank you to those who served our country is something that makes me feel good. Give it a try, realize that without their sacrifices the United States as we know it might not exist.
It’s a week off for me. I’ve been more than flattered by those of you who contacted me directly, rekindling prior relationships and being appreciative of the content of what I write. I’m fortunate being able to do something I love doing. Furthermore having you, those I admire and respect say “nice things” to me about what I post, well what more can I say except thanks . . . and stay tuned. The Ticker EDU, like many of my ventures is taking on a life of its own. That’s another reason why I’m taking this week “off”; it’s time to reflect on “what’s next” in my life. Remember, I’m a young 68-year old with a lot more to give back; and nothing makes me happier than doing just that.
Sorry, I rambled a bit; I do that. I’ll keep you up-to-date as I review what’s happening in this world as I contemplate what’s next in my world this week and give thanks to those who provided all of us the freedom to do just that. If you have a little time on your hands perhaps review the archives of my prior postings. The Investing & Trading Psychology posts are critical to anyone’s success; maybe start there. Then just “click” around; if you are new to The Ticker I think you’ll find a few posts of interest. If there is something you’d like to read let me know.
Everyone learns at their own pace. If you pick everything up the first time through, great but if not email me at david@thetickeredu.com so we can further help. Thanks to all of you who have adopted what is being created and presented; we’re humbled by the response and referrals. Again, let me know what you want to learn, I’m all ears.
A week of reflection, eh . . . what better than a little Diana Ross and the Supremes . . . hope you enjoy and take the time to reflect and give thanks to all you have.
